Body Shapes of Piranha and Pirambeba

by Frank Magallanes, October 18, 2006

The piranha and pirambeba are interesting fish and native common names always seem to reflect the fishes body shape by either its color or resemblance to fruit, feeding habits or other animals. The more blunt-headed species such as Pygocentrus species, with its powerful musculature hidden underneath its gills with the lower jaw and its razor sharp teeth clip off pieces of animal bone, flesh and all.
