PHOTOGRAPHS OF Pygocentrus cariba
The first photograph below shows the species found in The Piranha Fact and Fiction book by Harald Schultz. In this outdated book the fish shown was misidentified as Serrasalmus nattereri.
These photographs demonstrate the juvenile forms of Pygocentrus cariba. As you can see from the juvenile photos, the humeral spot is not always present. In most cases, it develops later in life. Size of juvenile apparently has nothing to do when it forms. These fish below were purchased and arrived on May 29th, 2011 at 12:32 pm. It took from that date to June 10, 2011 for the humeral spot to begin showing.

Below is an example of their feeding frenzy, photographed by Edouard Paiva. He went to Hato El Frio in the Venezuelan Llanos in April 13 and 14 and pictured a group of Pygocentrus cariba eating a big piece of meat that was offered to them in Rio Caño Guaritico.
